Honouring This Land

CELEBRATING PERSPECTIVE

Throughout the Centre, you’ll find artwork by artists from different cultural backgrounds and perspectives. One wonderful piece is the Turtle Pond terrazzo design at the entrance of the South Building, inspired by the area’s railway history. The floor features the shell pattern of the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), three abstract turtle shells with silhouettes of a Leopard Frog, Tadpole, and Frog Egg, and along the edge, a Spiny Softshell Turtle and a Raven with outstretched wings.

Woodpecker Column

The striking 100-foot Woodpecker Column features a Pileated Woodpecker and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker perched on its surface. Created by Toronto artist duo Fastwűrms (Kim Kozzi and Dai Skuse), the sculpture glows at night through colored glass embedded in its many holes. Positioned near a ceremonial entrance, it draws inspiration from the tradition of the sacro bosco—an enchanted garden meant to surprise, inspire, and provoke thought.

Toronto Summit Tapestry

The “Toronto Summit Tapestry,” created by Joanna Staniszkis, was commissioned by the Metro Toronto Convention Centre as a lasting tribute to the Toronto Economic Summit held from June 19–21, 1988. It was officially dedicated by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney on June 18, 1988.

Mohawk: Meeting

The mural Mohawk: Meeting features fifteen polished stainless steel cut-outs layered with vivid neon-painted designs. While it may seem abstract at first, closer observation reveals symbolic shapes that hint at its deeper meaning. Inspired by the Indigenous origin of the name “Toronto,” meaning “a place of meeting,” the artwork reflects the artist’s vision of the Convention Centre as a space for connection and exchange.
