Metro Toronto Convention Centre to host prestigious global community of wound care experts

TORONTO, ONTARIO, June 2, 2008 – The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) is set to host a global community of more than 3,000 wound care experts when the 3rd Congress of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies (WUWHS) meets here June 4 - 8, 2008.

This is the first time the WUWHS’ important World Union Congress will be held in North America, and Canada has the privilege of hosting this event. The Congress is sponsored, hosted and accredited by the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine and Departments of Medicine and Public Health Sciences.

”One Problem – One Voice reflects the primary theme for our Congress and speaks to our goal of working towards a universal solution to improve patient outcomes by providing evidence-information information for best clinical practice,” said Professor R. Garry Sibbald, President-Elect and Meeting Chair for the WUWHS Congress. “We are proud to be hosting this event in Toronto and look forward to welcoming our delegates to our beautiful and multicultural city.”

The primary goal of the World Union 2008 Congress will be to present the latest in wound care research and treatment for improved patient outcomes. The five-day meeting will include presentations by more than 200 key international professionals and opinion leaders from the field of wound care as well as public figures such as Canada’s own Stephen Lewis and Dr. Marla Shapiro. Key topics to be covered will include Burns, Foot and Leg Ulcers, Post Operative Surgical & Traumatic Wounds, Pressure Ulcers, Infection, Quality of Life, Pain, and Wound Care Challenges in the Developing World.

Wound care is a serious and escalating global health care issue and Canada is a world leader in treatment innovation, prevention and research. Canadian expertise is helping to improve wound care standards for patients and health care professionals both at home and abroad. “We are very pleased to be the first North American city chosen to host this prestigious group,” said Barry Smith, President and CEO of the MTCC. “It is Canada’s leadership and commitment to sharing its knowledge and expertise which helped to bring this Congress to Toronto.”

The MTCC anticipates this major convention will produce significant revenue for Toronto’s hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues, with an overall economic impact of approximately $6.5 million in direct spending.
