More than 5,000 of the World’s Leading Magnetic Resonance Specialists to Convene at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre

TORONTO, ONTARIO, April 30, 2008 – More than 5,000 medical experts from 60 countries around the world, including clinicians, engineers and basic scientists specializing in magnetic resonance imaging, will convene for almost a full week in Toronto when the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) convenes its 16th Scientific Meeting & Exhibition. The event will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) from May 3-9, 2008.

The International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine is a non-profit professional association devoted to furthering the development and application of magnetic resonance techniques in medicine and biology. The Society holds annual scientific meetings and sponsors other major educational and scientific workshops. The annual Scientific Meeting & Exhibition is the top event of the profession’s international calendar and offers a wide variety of educational opportunities, lively discussions on current issues, and presentations on the latest scientific findings and research.

“The 2008 ISMRM meeting in Toronto will see highlights of the most important interactions between physicists, engineers, and physicians that have translated scientific discoveries to patient care. The Metro Toronto Convention Centre provides outstanding opportunities for physicians and scientists to interact, imagine the future of medical imaging, and begin the initial steps leading to future discoveries that will transform medicine. The research highlighted at our meeting this year will become the clinical standard of care in the weeks, years, and months to come,” said Jeffrey L. Duerk, Ph.D., ISMRM President.

“We are delighted to be welcoming this group of top MRI experts to the MTCC,” said Barry Smith, President and CEO of the Centre. “MRI technology has been a tremendous innovation in medical imaging in recent years. We hope their annual meeting is highly productive,” he added.

The MTCC anticipates this major convention will produce significant revenue for Toronto’s hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues, with an overall economic impact of approximately $10.75 million in direct spending.
