TORONTO, ONTARIO – The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) was awarded the National Meetings Industry Day Influence Award by Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Toronto Chapter, the largest Canadian chapter of the world’s leading trade association for global meetings and conventions.
The MTCC received this award from senior MPI officials at National Meetings Industry Day (NMID), held April 19th, 2007, at the MTCC. The event is designed to recognize and celebrate the importance of the Canadian industry and the significant impact it has on Canada’s economic prosperity.
The National Meetings Industry Day Influence Award recognizes organizations which in the last year have significantly raised industry value and profile, and made a substantial contribution to the community. In selecting the MTCC as the recipient of this year’s Award, MPI’s judges sought to underscore the extent to which the staff of the MTCC has advanced the stature of the meetings & conventions industry. Specifically they noted:
- the MTCC’s cooperative partnership with all sectors of the community to position Toronto as a Tier One destination;
- the MTCC’s successful marketing initiatives to bring large international meetings to the Toronto Region, resulting in economic benefits; and,
- the MTCC’s many initiatives in Green Meeting development and providing leadership for the industry’s response to environmental concerns.
“We could not be more thrilled to be receiving this prestigious award,” said MTCC President and CEO Barry Smith. “As an organization we make a concerted effort to advance the interest of the meetings and convention industry in our community. It is particularly rewarding when a prestigious organization such as MPI recognizes our efforts in this regard,” he added.
A national MPI program, National Meeting Industry Day was held simultaneously in eight major cities across Canada in partnership with the Convention Centres of Canada and MPI Foundation Canada. Business community guests and meetings industry professionals are participating in a variety of educational and networking activities. The MTCC received its award during a special luncheon ceremony.
