Toronto, ON - The National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS) will elect officers, hold multiple educational sessions, and award honours at the association’s 48th national conference, to be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC), July 25–29, 2006.
The National Conference will feature inspirational speakers, the 6th Annual Culinary Challenge, a product showcase (featuring a record-high 406 booths), interest sessions, and more. This is NACUFS’ second joint conference with CCUFSA (Canadian College and University Food Service Association). An estimated 2,000+ people will be attending the conference, including members representing institutions of higher learning in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and other countries; industry members; and exhibitors. Keynote speakers will include:
Jamie Clarke, who in 1997 became the ninth Canadian to summit Mount Everest. A dedicated adventurer, author and speaker, Jamie demonstrates how the life lessons he learned during his Mt. Everest expeditions may be directly applied to every organization’s challenges.
William Strauss, a leading authority on American generations, and a noted playwright, theatre director, performer, consultant, author and speaker. His most recent book, Millennials Go to College, advises deans, admissions officers, and faculties about how the new, very post Generation-X generation is changing campus life.
Liz Murray, who will share her fascinating and inspirational personal story of growing up under the shadow of two drug addicted parents whom she began supporting at age 10. Homeless at age 15, after the death of her mother, Liz describes how she overcame incredible odds to finish high school in just two years while living on the streets and was subsequently awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University.
NACUFS will also hold three separate pre-conference workshops July 24–25, 2006: (1) Campus Concessions Workshop, (2) Neighbourhood Marketing: The Campus C-Store Workshop, and (3) Analyze This! Benchmarking & Financial Analysis Workshop.
Other events occurring during the national conference include an Evening of Distinction where the two associations will present their most prestigious awards (NACUFS’ Theodore W. Minah Distinguished Service Award and the CCUFSA Gord G. Mann Distinguished Service Award), and the Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards Luncheon.
“We always look forward to this week with great anticipation and excitement,” said NACUFS President Sharon Coulson. “The national conference creates unique opportunities for our members to network, build new relationships with their peers and industry members, learn about trends, and grow professionally. It will truly be a week to remember.”
“We are delighted to be welcoming this large group of representatives from North America’s higher learning community to the MTCC and to Toronto,” said Barry Smith, the MTCC’s CEO. Smith added that the MTCC anticipates this major convention will produce significant revenue for Toronto’s hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues, with an overall economic impact of approximately $3.2 million in direct spending.
