TORONTO, ONTARIO, March 28, 2006 – The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) will be host to approximately 5,000 medical specialists from around the world when the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) holds its 31st Annual Scientific Meeting in Toronto March 30 to April 4, 2006. This is the first time the meeting has been held at an international venue.
Interventional radiologists are highly specialized, board-certified physicians who use X-rays, MRI and other imaging technologies to provide innovative, targeted treatments at the source of the disease non-surgically. As the inventors of angioplasty and stenting, interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive modern medicine that offers less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery.
Participants at the SIR’s scientific gathering will receive the latest information in basic and clinical research, experience techniques and technologies utilized in IR around the world, and see the latest equipment used in IR. An international faculty of almost 500 speakers will be presenting on a wide range of topics, including: male infertility; pediatrics; pelvic pain; cancer; cryoplasty; and, post-menopausal pain.
“This meeting is based on the simple premise that interventional radiology is the best specialty in medicine. This is an exciting time in our field, and this event will unite our energy, innovation and research in one outstanding international venue. We are very excited to be coming to Toronto,” said John A. Kaufman, MD, Chair of the SIR’s 2006 Annual Scientific Meeting Committee.
“We are delighted to be welcoming this large group of specialists to the MTCC,” added Barry Smith, the MTTC’s CEO. “Interventional radiology is a dynamic specialty at the forefront of health care, with an unparalleled ability to innovate, adapt and grow while providing thorough clinical care. We are pleased to be a part of this and to be supporting their important work around the world.”
Smith added that the MTCC anticipates this major convention will produce significant revenue for Toronto’s hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues, with an overall economic impact of approximately $12.25 million in direct spending.
