Metro Toronto Convention Centre appoints award -winning industry professional, as new V.P. Food & Beverage.

TORONTO, September 29, 2005 – The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Willett at its new Vice President of Food & Beverage services.

Willett’s managerial career began in 1984 and his extensive industry experience includes positions as Director of Food and Beverage Operations at a number of major four-star hotels within the Westin Hotels & Resorts chain.  Willett also served as General Manager, Food and Beverage and acting General Manager of Retail Operations at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.  Most recently, he was Hotel Manager at the Westin Nova Scotian in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“We are simply delighted that Richard Willett will be joining our staff here at the MTCC,” said Barry Smith, the MTCC’s CEO.  “Richard comes to us with more than 20 years of management and leadership experience in the hospitality field.  At the MTCC, our people are the Centre, and he will add tremendous value to our outstanding F&B team,” he added.

Willett is also an award-winner who gives back to his profession.  In 1992, he received the Young Hotelier of the World award from the International Hotel Association in Paris as well as the Thurston Duper Inspirational Award from Westin Hotels & Resorts.  He was also inducted into the International Food & Beverage Hall of Fame Society in 2003.

“I am thrilled to be returning to Toronto and to be a part of this extraordinary organization,” noted Willett.  “It is a privilege to join a team of hospitality experts who have been recognized by both the industry and their clients for delivering top products and services,” he said.

When serving his industry, Willett has not shied away from high profile jobs.  In 1999, he was invited to be a Canadian Liaison for the International Food & Beverage Forum, a position he will continue to hold in his new role at the MTCC. The Forum is a group of Hospitality Executives whose mission is to enhance global dialogue, knowledge, viable creativity and to foster the education of young professionals.  Willett will be one of only two Canadians fulfilling this role.

Willett also was the chair of the Taste of the Nation in both Edmonton and Ottawa, and he wrote the occupational standards for many hospitality positions.  These standards were incorporated into the Alberta Tourism Education Council and adopted by the Ontario Tourism and Education Corporation.

“The MTCC is a remarkable facility, both for its operational capabilities and for the people who ensure event and trade show success every day,” Willett observed. He joins the MTCC effective October 3, 2005.
